I read an interesting article this morning in a local paper about how a Bupa care home will be one of the first in the country to have a ‘dementia champion’ in order to bring higher standards of dementia care to residents.
The ‘dementia champion’ who is a senior carer in the Bupa care home has just completed the ‘pioneering’ Alzheimer’s Society programme which trains individuals to deliver the highest quality dementia care by working with staff to change the culture of how dementia is perceived within the care home. This pioneering programme is the first of its kind to be launched in the country and will be rolled out across 130 Bupa Care homes.
Slightly perplexing to me this, just simply because as far as I am aware, the Alzheimer’s Society’s ’pioneering’ dementia care programme was launched as far back as 2005. How do I know this? Because unless I was living in a dream, I have actually participated in it and seen it in action in many non-Bupa care homes across the country ever since.
Do not get me wrong, any step-up to the mark in terms of dementia care provision has to be applauded, but here is yet another example of how a bit of ‘rebranding’ can make a well-worked concept sound like something that is just arriving from the starship enterprise. As regular readers will know, this is something that our government do all too well!
I have absoluetely no doubt that those who go through this programme will make significant differences to the dementia care provision in their care homes- I know this because I have seen it first-hand, However, it is important to be aware that although Bupa care homes might have the marketing budget to promote this initiative better than smaller individual care homes, it is far from being the first such initiative and there are other care homes out there who are also passionate in delivering high quality dementia care.
If you are someone who knows of a care home that is delivering high quality dementia care, whether a Bupa care home or not ;> -please write us a review of it at the Whereforcare website- you might really be helping someone to make one of the hardest decisions they will ever have to make.
